Ted Mayes, Marian's father, ran the dairy behind the bank, and lived on the Goudhurst Road opposite the school. The carnival float pictured was publicity for Kleenex (Kimberley Clark, Aylesford) who provided the lorry, sashes, giant tissue boxes and the samples which the girls threw out during the procession. It was organised through the post office where Dawn worked.

A4 enlargement of B/W postcard "Beech, Marden". Shop (illegible facia), 8? people, 2? bicycles. Costume indicates 1890-1910? Caption "The Beech store late 1800s. The owner Mr Brooker, wearing a bowler hat, stands to the left of the gate. TS says Mr Brooker is standing in shop doorway wearing apron. The baby grew up to be a senior methodist minister." Buildings, Commerce.
Further caption (manuscript) is U-0960.
M/s text (in green folder): "The Beech Stores in the days of the Brookers who were Strict and Particular Baptists and were related to the Honesses and Lushes and interested in the Providence Chapel. F.O. Brooker is standing outside in bowler hat; the baby being held later grew up and became a Methodist minister and was for one year the President of them. He was minister to Archway Central Hall for several years."
The Beech Store was owned by the Walter family. F.O. Brooker, who married a Miss Walter, ran the store which (at least at one time) had the signage "Walter Beech Store". (Info from the Walter family, Oct 2009.)
