Marden Street
|
A4 B/W enlargement of postcard "Marden Street". High Street looking east from centre of road outside White Lyon House. From left: White Lyon House, Unicorn (sign on pole, car parked outside), shop etc on corner of Maidstone Road, ... (present) Crowhurst & Tompsett (barrel on pavement, signs "Drapers", "...Nicotine, Hop Pockets, Hop & Fruit..." 1920. Buildings. Commerce. Pubs. Roads.
Modern m/s on corres side of original p/c states "Crowhurst & Tompsetts before window extension. Note barrel by the cellar flaps down which bacon and cheese was lowered. Sometimes it would flood. Also the handcart which errand boys pushed round on delivery of groceries or picked up goods from station. Outside the Unicorn stands a ... or Model T Ford, probably belonging to Bert Fread of Fread & Eaves the bakers, Maidstone Road. [Note also] the sign on the post with bar across from wall. The toilet at end of block was almost the public loo for the village."

Wheelwrights
|
B/W photo of wheelwrights (2) in yard, one with pipe. George Rootes - Bill Lavender - Mr Prebble. Buildings. Commerce. People.
Formerly captioned (now cropped): "Fitting a tyre. The forge owner George Rootes (on the right) and Bill Lavender his brother-in-law who lived in Beech Meadow. They are putting an iron tyre on a wooden cartwheel. The metal ring that formed the tyre was heated to make it expand. It was then hammered onto the wheel and cooled with water to make the metal ring shrink: this pulled them together and made a tight fit. The cartwheel was probably made by Mr Prebble whose workshop adjoined 'BANKS' House."
A shorter caption is also U-0955.
